Kano Assembly Pushes to Make Hausa Mandatory in Schools

KANO – The Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday took a significant step towards enhancing the state’s education system by proposing a bill that aims to make the use of the Hausa language, compulsory as a medium of instruction in schools across Kano State.
The proposed bill, known as the Kano State Mother Tongue (Hausa Language) Education Enforcement Bill, was put sponsored by Hon. Musa Ali Kachako, the representative for Takai Constituency.
During the plenary session, Hon. Kachako presented the bill, arguing that it is consistent with international educational norms.
He pointed out that several developed countries, including China, Japan, and India, have made notable advancements in science, technology, and mathematics by incorporating their native languages into early childhood education.
Kachako stated that using Hausa as the main language for teaching would improve understanding, lower failure rates, and decrease the number of students dropping out of school.
He maintained that “Additionally, it would help preserve the state’s cultural heritage and make education more accessible and inclusive for all students.”
The Mp said “Producing a document backed by law will not only add value to education but also strengthen the foundation of learning and make science and technology subjects easier for students to understand.”
Following thorough debate, the House of Assembly decided to forward the bill to the Education Standing Committee for additional review and input.
