2027:APC Opts for Peace Deals Over Primaries in Kano

KANO — The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Thursday night adopted a consensus-based approach to candidate selection ahead of the 2027 elections.
The move was announced by the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf during a stakeholders’ meeting held with party leaders across the 44 local government areas.
Yusuf directed party officials at the grassroots to return to their wards and reach agreements on candidates within three days.
“We believe consensus is the best path at this moment to avoid unnecessary disputes and ensure cohesion within the party,” the governor said.
“Where agreements are not reached, the state leadership will step in to take appropriate decisions in the interest of the party.”
He further disclosed that Sunday has been fixed as the deadline for submission of candidates’ names from all local government areas, noting that the list would be compiled and forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in line with electoral guidelines.
The governor emphasized that the consensus arrangement is not intended to sideline party members but to promote harmony and strengthen the APC’s chances in the forthcoming elections.
He urged stakeholders to prioritize the party’s collective interest over personal ambitions.
At the meeting, a member of the House of Representatives representing Rano, Bunkure and Kibiya Federal Constituency, Kabiru Alasan Rurum, revealed that leaders in his constituency had already embraced the directive by agreeing on a consensus candidate.
“We have resolved all differences and agreed to present Ibrahim Muhammad Malami Rano as our candidate for the State House of Assembly,” Rurum stated.
“This is to ensure we move forward as one united family without rancour.”
Also speaking, former Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, called on party stakeholders to embrace peace and cooperation, stressing that internal unity remains key to electoral success.
“Politics should not divide us beyond repair. We must work together, respect one another, and ensure that APC remains strong in Kano and across the country,” Ganduje said, urging all factions to align with the consensus strategy for the overall success of the party.
