‘I Alone Killed My Aunt, Six Children,’ Suspect Tells Court

KANO — A defendant standing trial over the alleged murder of his paternal aunt and her six children, Umar Auwalu has told the Kano State High Court that he alone carried out the killings single handedly.
Umar Auwalu made the declaration on Wednesday while testifying in his defence before Kano State High Court No. 11, presided over by Justice Nasiru Saminu insisted that his two co-defendants had no involvement in the crime.
The trial stems from the alleged killing of seven members of the same family in the Ciranci area of Kano, a case that attracted widespread public attention due to the brutality of the incident.
The case also involves Isyaku Yakubu, also known as Chobe, and Yakubu Dayyabu.
“I alone killed my aunt and her six children. Isyaku Yakubu Chobe and Yakubu Dayyabu had no hand in the incident,” Umar told the court during his testimony.
He further claimed that he had earlier implicated the two co-defendants after allegedly enduring severe hardship and pressure at the hands of police officers following his arrest.
The defendant also told the court that a traditional spiritualist had given him a perfume, which he described as a charm, and instructed him to continue committing the type of offences he had previously carried out.
During Wednesday’s proceedings, the prosecution, led by Barrister Safiya Yalwati and Barrister Zaharaddeen Hamisu Kofar Mata, presented the investigating police officer, Corporal Aliyu Jamilu.
Counsel for the defence, on the other hand, called witnesses as the defence opened its case.
Following the proceedings, Justice Nasiru Saminu adjourned the matter until July 21, 2026, for the continuation of the defence hearing.
