KANO —- Four holidaymakers have drowned in a tragic incident at Wasai Dam in Minjibir Local Government Area of Kano State.
The victims, all young men, were said to have visited the popular recreational spot at Minjibir Park to celebrate the Sallah holiday when the accident occurred.
Witnesses said the group had boarded a canoe for leisure when it suddenly capsized.
According to local sources, the four victims, aged between 20 and 21, were unable to escape after the canoe overturned, leading to their drowning before help could reach them.
The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns about safety at local tourist and recreational sites, with calls for stricter measures to prevent similar incidents, especially during festive periods when such locations attract large numbers of visitors.
The incident was confirmed by Malam Ma’aruf Shu’aibu, a representative of the Bachirawa ward head, who spoke with Newsmen on the development.
“They had gone there to enjoy the Sallah holiday like many others, but unfortunately the canoe they were in capsized, and they lost their lives,” he said.
Residents disclosed that the victims all came from two neighbouring households in the Bachirawa area, describing the loss as devastating for both families and the wider community.
Already, funeral prayers for the deceased were held on Sunday after the Maghrib prayer, with a large crowd of sympathisers in attendance to pay their last respects and support the bereaved families.
As at press time, the Kano Fire service department is yet to issue official confirmation of the incident.
