Zulum Unveils First Intra-City Rail Project In Northern Nigeria

Maiduguri (Borno state North East Nigeria) -Borno state government over the weekend took infrastructure development to the next level, as it initiate the first northern region intra-city rail network initially project in Maiduguri connecting the capital city with surrounding areas.
Authorities in Borno are keeping to its chest the total cost of this capital intensive project, butthe pioneering project, the first of its kind in Nigeria’s 19 northern states, target to transform the transportation landscape and boost economic growth.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum revealed that the initial phase of the project would feature 12 strategically located terminals within Maiduguri, linking key markets, schools, public spaces, and economically viable areas.
Zulum assured that the project’s scope may be expanded in the future to cover local government areas, facilitating seamless passenger and goods movement, and unlocking economic opportunities across the state.
Borno’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, along with the implementation partner, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), inspected the proposed rail terminals and routes.
Bamanga emphasized that feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community consultations are ongoing to ensure the project’s successful implementation.
He disclosed that upon completion, the intra-city rail project is expected to alleviate transportation challenges, revitalize the economy, create jobs, and modernize the city’s transportation network.
Bamanga stressed that “This innovative project aligns with Zulum’s broader strategy to restore peace and prosperity to Borno State, following the devastating impact of the Boko Haram insurgency.”
