Water Crisis: Kano Invites Communities to Apply for Solar-Powered Boreholes

KANO — The Kano State Government has opened applications for communities seeking access to solar-powered boreholes as part of efforts to address water shortages affecting residents across the state.
The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, targets immediate relief to communities facing difficulties in accessing clean and potable water while major water infrastructure projects undergo rehabilitation.
Speaking on the programme, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, said the intervention forms part of the 166 solar-powered boreholes approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to boost water supply and ease the burden on residents.
According to him, the boreholes are expected to deliver about 4.14 million litres of water daily, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to improving access to safe water across Kano.
“The programme is designed to provide immediate relief to communities currently facing challenges in accessing potable water,” Dr. Hashim said.
“While we pursue long-term solutions through the rehabilitation of major water facilities, it is important to support communities experiencing acute shortages.”
He explained that work is progressing on the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, Challawa Water Treatment Plant and the Goron Dutse Water Reservoir Complex, projects expected to significantly improve water supply upon completion.
Dr. Hashim noted that the rehabilitation works are scheduled to be completed within eight months from their commencement, after which residents in Kano metropolis and surrounding areas are expected to enjoy more reliable water services.
He called on community leaders, residents and other stakeholders to take advantage of the opportunity by applying through the ministry’s official borehole application platform, adding that the information gathered would help authorities identify and prioritise the most deserving communities.
“The Kano State Government remains committed to ensuring equitable access to water resources and delivering sustainable solutions that improve the welfare and quality of life of all residents,” the commissioner stated.
He urged eligible communities to submit their applications promptly through the ministry’s website.
