Sanitation Crisis Hits Kano Schools As Pupils Cried For Help

By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul

KANO – Sanitation crisis deepens in several
Primary schools located in Kano Central senatorial District following the absence of functional toilets.

A random survey across schools within Kano metropolitan Councils revealed that pupils now defacate in the open

The development was sequel to finding by the Finenews  Nigeria on the performance level of state of emergency declared by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf 6 months ago to address the age long neglect of the sector.

The toilet facilities in a number of schools visited are either non existent, or have packed up due failing structure.

Evidence of open defacation constitutes an eyesore in most schools visited with noticable overcrowded population.

At Ungogo Special primary school, the Head girl of the school, Jamila Isa Suleiman decried the appalling state of sanitation facilities at her educational institution.

She revealed that students are compelled to engage in open defecation during class hours due to the scarcity of toilets, pointing out that during breaks, students are forced to seek relief at their nearby homes, thereby disrupting their academic routine.

Miss Suleiman emphasized that the sole solution to this predicament lies in the state government’s provision of adequate toilet facilities, specifically advocating for the construction of toilets that can cater to at least four classes of students.

This, she believes, would greatly alleviate the current sanitation crisis and foster a more conducive learning environment.

On his part, the school Head boy, Nura Yusuf, also appealed to relevant authority to rehabilitate the collapsed facilities to stem open defacation.

The situation is same at Yelwa model primary school, Dala local government area of Kano metropolis, where the Head Teacher, Umar Aliyu took his time on tour of collapsed facilities in the school.

He said, I have a students population of 1, 164, and 31 teachers enduring these problems during school hours, and want to specifically call on the Education Secretary to come to our aid.

Aliyu said “We don’t have enough toilet, we have 2 catering for the students population, these development encourage open defacation.”
