Kano Loses Influential Tijjaniyya Scholar, Sheikh Mai Salanta

By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul

KANO — Kano has been thrown into mourning following the death of a prominent Tijjaniyya scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Mustapha Ridwan, popularly known as Sheikh Mai Salanta.

The respected cleric reportedly passed away in the early hours of Friday after a prolonged illness, bringing to an end decades of religious service and scholarship.

Family sources confirmed the development, noting that the late Sheikh had been battling health challenges for some time before his demise.

Sheikh Mai Salanta was widely regarded as one of the influential figures within the Tijjaniyya movement in Kano, where he dedicated his life to teaching and propagation of Islam.

Over the years, he trained thousands of students in Qur’anic studies and Islamic teachings, while also instilling discipline and moral values in his followers.

He was known for organizing regular preaching sessions, religious gatherings, and mentorship programmes that attracted large audiences within and beyond Kano.

Many residents, students, and fellow clerics have continued to express grief over his passing, describing him as a humble teacher and spiritual guide whose impact will be felt for generations.

Meanwhile, funeral prayers for the late scholar are scheduled to take place at about 11:00 a.m. at his residence in Tukuntawa area, Gidan Maza, in Kano metropolis.
