KANO(Kano, North West Nigeria) – In a significant blow to land grabbing syndicates operating in Kano State, the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission on Friday said it has seized over 1,000 plots of land from individuals suspected of perpetrating these crimes.
The Commission’s Chairman, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji, during a press briefing in Kano revealed that “So far, two individuals have been arrested and are currently assisting the investigation.
Magaji, a Barrister at law, said the land grabbers have been using unscrupulous lawyers to facilitate their activities.
He stressed that “They would typically collude with these lawyers to file false applications, often naming non-existent defendants, and then obtain consent judgments.”
Magaji emphasized that the state government is not a party to these suits, as the lands in question are owned by the Kano State Government.
According to the Commission’s actions are backed by an executive order signed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which empowers them to recover lands grabbed by these syndicates.
Magaji, however praised the officials of the Department of State Service for rejecting a bribe offer of 2.8 million Naira from one of the suspects during the arrest.
He explained that “The Anti-Graft Commission has demonstrated its commitment to complementing the state government’s efforts to restore sanity to the state, and What we are doing now will put an end to these ungodly activities.”
