KANO — A wave of violence swept through a community in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State on Thursday night as armed men launched a deadly attack, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
The attackers, said to be about four in number, stormed Barbaji village in Jajaye Ward around 9:00 p.m., riding motorcycles and dressed in khaki.
Witnesses said the gunmen appeared to have a clear target — a local vigilante member identified as Alasan Yellow.
He was reportedly shot at close range in front of his shop, triggering panic across the area.
In the chaos that followed, another resident who attempted to intervene was also shot.
Rather than retreat, the assailants escalated the violence, advancing to the vigilante office where they opened fire indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee for safety.
Commander of the Rogo Vigilante Group, Alhaji Haruna Barhaya, who confirmed the incident while briefing local authorities, said the attack left one person dead on the spot, while several others sustained injuries.
“Four of the victims are currently receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries,” he said, adding that the toll could have been higher without swift intervention.
Vigilante members, alongside other security operatives, quickly mobilised to evacuate the injured to nearby medical facilities.
One of the victims, said to be in critical condition, was later referred to a hospital in Gwarzo for advanced medical care.
In response, security has been reinforced in the area, with authorities deploying a joint patrol team comprising personnel from neighbouring Kiru Local Government Area and parts of Kaduna State.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to track down those responsible for the attack.
