KANO (Kano, North West Nigeria) – No fewer than 5,200 women across the state’s 44 local government areas were empowered with N50,000 monthly grant by Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf on Tuesday.
The program, which was launched in May 2024, was designed by Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to provide a seed fund for indigent women to engage in projects, learn skills, and become self-reliant artisans.
Since its inception, the program has improved the livelihoods of over 41,600 vulnerable women, removing significant financial barriers and enabling them to contribute to the state’s economy.
Governor Yusuf in his speech emphasized the crucial role women play in nation-building and the need to invest in their economic empowerment.
He cited a 2022 Nigeria Multidimensional Poverty Index report, which showed Kano State ranking above the national average with 10.5 million people living in multidimensional poverty.
According to him “To address this, the governor’s administration has implemented various programs, including universal health coverage for over 300,000 vulnerable individuals, enrollment of thousands of children in public schools, and initiatives to improve access to quality education, food security, and employment opportunities.”
The governor urged the beneficiaries to utilize the grant responsibly, noting that it is not a loan and comes with no strings attached. He expressed hope that by next year, many of the beneficiaries would have become employers of labor in their localities.
The program has received recognition from Leg-Wide Communications, which has partnered with SMEDAN to confer the Small, Micro, and Medium Enterprise Governor of the Year 2024 award on Governor Yusuf.
