FG Prioritises Sustainability in Solarisation Drive, Says ECN DG

The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Abdullahi Mustapha, on Thursday said, the Federal Government is placing greater emphasis on sustainability, strategic deployment and long-term community impact as it advances the Renewed Hope Solarisation Project.
The Federal Government’s solarisation drive has included interventions targeted at critical public institutions. In Kano, for instance, a 2MW solar mini-grid project was recently commenced at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, as part of a larger 7MW solar power project.
Dr. Mustapha in his verified Facebook page explained that the initiative was not merely about expanding access to electricity, but about ensuring that solar interventions deliver enduring value and improve the quality of life of Nigerians.
The Director General stated that the Renewed Hope Solarisation Project remains a critical component of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to expand energy access and create opportunities through practical interventions.
“As the initiative progresses, our emphasis is increasingly on sustainability, strategic deployment and ensuring that its benefits translate into lasting value for communities,” he said.
The ECN boss acknowledged that significant work remained to be done, but said the direction of the programme was clear, with government increasingly focused on interventions capable of producing lasting benefits rather than short-term gains.
Mustapha linked the drive to the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to build what he described as a more prosperous and energy-secure Nigeria through practical solutions that directly improve citizens’ lives.
He said the government would continue to support innovation and strengthen partnerships as part of efforts to expand the reach and effectiveness of the solarisation programme.
“We will continue to support innovation, strengthen partnerships and deliver interventions that turn the Renewed Hope Agenda from a vision into measurable impact for Nigerians,” Mustapha said.
The ECN Director-General said the approach was intended to ensure that investments in renewable energy translate into tangible improvements for communities, while strengthening Nigeria’s broader energy security objectives.
