2027: Barau’s Grip on Kano North Slips as Key Mobilisers, Legislative Aides Quit

KANO — Fresh political realignments have unsettled Kano North Senatorial District following the resignation of prominent grassroots mobiliser Mustapha Yahaya Shuwaki and hundreds of his supporters from the political camp of Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.
The mass exit came barely 24 hours after Shuwaki and his supporters were publicly received into the All Progressives Congress (APC) by Senator Barau, deepening speculation over cracks within the senator’s grassroots political structure.
Addressing supporters, Shuwaki said the decision followed extensive consultations with community leaders, political associates and supporters across Kano North, adding that the group would announce its next political destination in due course.
“Our commitment is to the people who entrusted us with leadership. After wide consultations, we resolved to pursue a political direction that reflects their collective aspirations,” he said.
The latest development follows the resignation of Hajiya Mariya Bichi, popularly known as Ƴar Kasuwa (Marin Barde), who stepped down from a position previously offered to her by Senator Barau.
Similarly, former Bichi Local Government Chairman, Hon. Saleh Rabiu Yan Gwarzo, resigned his appointment as a legislative aide to the Deputy Senate President while reaffirming his support for Engr. Abba Kabir Bichi.
Reacting to the wave of resignations, APC stalwart Ibrahim Sani said the departure of influential grassroots figures could present organisational challenges if internal grievances are not addressed.
“The symbolism is significant because these exits occurred almost immediately after a celebrated reception. It raises questions about internal reconciliation and the durability of political alliances,” Sani stated.
Senator Barau has represented Kano North in the Senate since 2015 and remains a central figure in the district’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
As of press time, Senator Barau’s media team had not responded to requests for comment.
