2027 : Presidency Targets Kwankwaso, As EFCC Probes NNPP Campaign Financing
By Editor
KANO – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly been instructed by the presidency to investigate the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in a bid to weaken the party and silence its national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
This move is allegedly aimed at targeting Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate, and stifling the only dissenting voice from the North ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to sources, the EFCC has been directed to open a case file against Kwankwaso and invite him for questioning regarding the alleged mismanagement of 2023 campaign funds.
Notably, a Kano State High Court had granted a perpetual order in June 2024, restraining the EFCC from inviting, arresting, or harassing Kwankwaso over the same allegations. However, insiders suggest that the EFCC may attempt to disregard this court order.
Kwankwaso’s recent criticism of President Tinubu’s perceived attempt to dominate the North is believed to be a factor in the EFCC’s investigation.
Kwankwaso had stated that Lagos was attempting to “colonize” the North, and that the presidency was interfering with Kano’s ability to appoint its own emir.
The presidency is also reportedly concerned about Kwankwaso’s growing political influence, particularly after a recent high-profile wedding ceremony in Kano attended by prominent opposition leaders, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Insiders claim that the meeting of opposition leaders in Kano posed a threat to the Tinubu-led government, prompting the presidency to clamp down on Kwankwaso’s political influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
