2027: It’s Self-Deception for Any Northerner to Seek Presidency — Gov Yusuf

KANO —– A fresh twist has entered Nigeria’s 2027 presidential debate as Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, declared that any Northerner nursing presidential ambition is merely deceiving himself, insisting that the nation’s unwritten power-sharing pact places the next presidency in Southern Nigeria.
At the moment, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar from Adamawa in the North East Nigeria is the standard bearer of ADC.
Speaking during the launch of the APC Presidential Door-to-Door Campaign in Kano, Yusuf said the North has a moral obligation to honour the rotational leadership understanding that followed the eight-year administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
“It is self-deception for any Northerner to contest for the presidency. We know power will not come back to us now. It must return to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term,” the governor declared.
He argued that respecting the zoning arrangement was essential to preserving national unity, recalling that Nigerians had agreed for the North to hold the presidency for eight years before handing power to the South for another eight-year cycle.
Yusuf urged political leaders across Northern Nigeria, particularly in the North-West, to rally behind President Tinubu’s re-election, saying patience and fidelity to political agreements would strengthen the country’s democracy rather than divide it.
The governor also announced that Kano State was committing itself “100 percent” to Tinubu’s second-term bid, citing ongoing federal investments in infrastructure, human capital development and other sectors as justification for the support.
Earlier, Yusuf received 50 branded campaign vehicles donated by High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo (Tompolo) through the President Bola Tinubu Door-to-Door Campaign Organisation, describing the gesture as a powerful demonstration of loyalty and confidence in the APC’s Renewed Hope agenda.
He disclosed that the vehicles would be distributed across Kano’s 44 local government areas to strengthen the party’s grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, adding that similar donations had reached all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The governor therefore called for peaceful, issue-based campaigns, urging politicians to sell their achievements and future programmes to voters instead of engaging in character assassination, while expressing confidence that the APC would record sweeping victories in the 2027 polls.
