Vandals Destroy Roadside Trees in Kano

KANO —- Vandals have destroyed several roadside trees planted by the Kano State Government along major roads in the state capital.
The incident, which was discovered on Monday morning, affected trees planted along the route leading to the Government House in within the precinct of Nassarawa GRA.
The trees were part of a recent urban beautification and climate mitigation initiative introduced by the state government.
Eyewitnesses reported that many of the young trees, planted only a few months ago, were either cut down or severely damaged overnight by unknown individuals.
Photographs from the scene show broken stems and uprooted saplings scattered along the road median.
The worst affected stretch, from the Government House axis to Kofar Nassarawa, is one of the busiest routes in Kano metropolis and had been undergoing landscaping as part of efforts to enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal and reduce environmental degradation.
Residents expressed anger over the destruction, describing it as a deliberate act of sabotage against projects funded with public resources.
Mahmud Isa, a city dweller called on authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible, warning that such actions could discourage future development efforts.
Environmental advocates also condemned the act, noting that the trees were meant to help reduce heat, improve air quality, and contribute to the fight against climate change in the state.
As at press time, Officials are yet to issue a formal statement on the incident, but sources within relevant agencies indicated that investigations may be launched to uncover those behind the destruction and prevent a recurrence.
