Kano Govt React to Tree Vandalism in Metropolis

KANO —- The Kano State Commissioner for Environment, Dahir Hashim, on Monday, expressed shock and disappointment over the vandalism of trees planted by the state government along a major road in the metropolis.
The affected trees, which were planted along the median of the road leading to the Government House in Nassarawa GRA, were reportedly cut down by unknown persons in the early hours of Monday.
The trees were part of an ongoing government initiative aimed at beautifying the city and improving environmental sustainability as well as mitigating the effects of climate change.
Reacting to the incident, Mr. Hashim described the act as disheartening, noting the level of effort invested in nurturing the trees over an extended period.
He said “Caring for trees is one of the most difficult tasks. Despite over a year of effort we put into maintaining them, some miscreants have destroyed them”.
Hashim further expressed shock at the destruction, stressing that the government remains committed to environmental restoration and urban greening despite such setbacks.
The affected route is one of the major roads within Kano metropolis targeted for beautification and environmental improvement under the state government’s urban renewal programme.
Although no group has claimed responsibility for the act, the incident comes at a time of heightened political activity in the state, raising concerns among residents about possible underlying tensions.
As of the time of filing this report, the security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
