KANO – A heavy exchange of gunfire between armed bandits and the Nigerian military at Bakaji and Unguwar Garma in the Goron Dutse area of Shanono Local Government Area has left nine suspected bandits dead. One vigilante was killed, while another sustained injuries during the clash.
The bandits reportedly invaded the area around 12:00 p.m., arriving in large numbers and heavily armed. According to reports, troops of the Nigerian military engaged them in a prolonged gun battle that lasted several hours.
Speaking on the incident, the Chairman of the Shanono/Bagwai Community Security Forum, Alhaji Yahya Bagobiri, said the bandits eventually fled the area after intense military resistance. However, before retreating, they abducted six persons and rustled about 40 cows.
Bagobiri disclosed that the military seized the attackers’ motorcycles after killing several of them. He added that the bandits attempted to return to the area between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m., opening fire on the troops, but were again repelled and failed to penetrate the community.
“Because they came in their hundreds, they still managed to abduct six persons and make away with 40 cows,” Bagobiri said. “But thanks to the military, who responded with heavy fire, killing nine of them and forcing them to abandon their motorcycles.”
He further noted that the bandits later returned under the cover of early morning hours to evacuate the bodies of their slain members.
Bagobiri commended the Nigerian military for their bravery and swift response, noting that their presence prevented greater destruction.
“I sincerely commend the military for safeguarding the area and stopping the bandits from causing serious havoc. They deserve appreciation, because at that time, residents could not even step out of their homes,” he said.
