Sanusi Seeks EU Partnership on Security, Education, Healthcare in Kano

KANO — The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on the European Union (EU) to deepen its support for Kano State and Nigeria in the areas of security, healthcare and education, particularly girl-child education.
Sanusi made the appeal in Kano while receiving the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, and his delegation at a mini durbar held in their honour at the Emir’s Palace in Kano.
The emir said stronger international partnerships were needed to address the security challenges facing the country, especially in the North-West region.
“Support for security initiatives will help restore lasting peace and stability in communities affected by insecurity,” Sanusi said.
He described healthcare and education as critical pillars of sustainable development, stressing that increased investment in both sectors would contribute significantly to social and economic progress.
Sanusi also stated that Kano’s historical importance as a centre of trade and civilisation in West Africa, noting that the emirate had maintained a rich cultural heritage dating back to the era of trans-Saharan commerce.
The monarch recalled that the Kano Durbar was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024, describing the event as one of the emirate’s enduring traditions for receiving distinguished guests.
Earlier, Mignot said the EU delegation’s visit was aimed at strengthening cooperation with Northern Nigeria in key areas of development.
“The European Union remains committed to supporting programmes that improve education, healthcare delivery and security across the region,” the ambassador said.
He commended Kano’s rich cultural heritage and expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to him and members of his delegation.
The colourful mini durbar featured horse riders adorned in traditional regalia and attracted palace officials, community leaders and other dignitaries.
