Okpebholo Makes U-Turn On Edo Free Bus Services

Benin (Edo State, South South Nigeria) – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Thursday made a surprising U-turn on his earlier directive to provide free bus services across the state’s three senatorial districts.
This reversal comes less than three weeks into his tenure as governor of the state that pride itself “the heartbeat of the nation”
Initially, Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, had announced the governor’s approval of the free bus services as part of his administration’s initiatives to enhance the welfare of Edo residents.
However, in a subsequent statement, Itua instructed the public to disregard the earlier announcement, citing that the governor was being briefed on operational issues surrounding the state-owned Edo City Transport Service (ECTS), which manages the free bus services.
The suspension of the free bus services has raised questions about the operational and logistical challenges facing the program. Residents are now awaiting further clarification on the state’s transportation policies.
This development has sparked mixed reactions, with some criticizing the governor’s decision as a policy somersault, while others see it as a necessary step to address the operational challenges facing the ECTS.
