KANO(Kano, North West Nigeria) – A brazen assault on a lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic has sent shockwaves through the academic community, raising concerns about student behavior and campus safety.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, involved a female student and her boyfriend, who allegedly targeted Aliyu Hamza Abdullahi, the exam officer for the department.
The attack has sparked widespread outrage in Kano state and environs with many calling for increased security measures on campus and stricter disciplinary actions against students involved in violent behavior.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack was precipitated by the student’s dissatisfaction with her assigned course.
Despite her attempts to have her admission transferred to a different department, her grades fell short of the requirements.
The student’s boyfriend, apparently enraged by the lecturer’s refusal to facilitate the course change, launched a vicious attack on Abdullahi, wielding a cutlass and aiming for his head.
The lecturer, who sustained severe injuries to his hands while defending himself, was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
However, the timely intervention of other students in the office prevented further harm, as they managed to subdue the assailant and prompt his flight.
In a bizarre twist, security officers who arrived at the student’s residence in Dorayi to apprehend her and her boyfriend were met with stiff resistance from a group of thugs, who assaulted them and paved way for the suspects to escape.
Auwal Ismail Bagwai, Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, confirmed the incident and assured that security agencies are actively investigating the case.
