Kano Records 10,000 Voters in First Week of Registration Exercise – Waiya

KANO – Kano State Government has over the weekend decried low voter registration across the 44 local Council, as it enjoined Stakeholders to employ creativity to boost citizens participation.
Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs bemoaned the low turn during his encounter with critical stakeholders on the challenges of the ongoing exercise
Abdullahi Waiya, who is the Chairman, Mobilization Taskforce On Voter Registration revealed that Kano recorded 100,000 voter during the concluded first week of the exercise, as he further pointed out that the development has put the state on 18th position in the country.
Waiya’s reaction posted on his verified Facebook account said “While more than 1.3 million Nigerians have so registered nationwide, Kano, the most populous state in the country, had only 10,000 registrations at the end of the first one week exercise, which place from 18th – 24th August, 2025, placing Kano at the 18th position”
He stated that “I expressed the deep concern of the government over the relatively low turn out for the online registration of voters cards recorded in the State, while we all believed that, this is unacceptable, we therefore committed to set out modalities to mobilize at least ten million registered voters before the end of the exercise.”
The Commissioner revealed plan to mobilise critical stakeholders that included the CSO’s, and to political group to evolved creativity in their messages to drive citizens participation.
Waiya said “Our second engagement was with Mawallafa Kwankwasiyya Association, and I emphasized the critical role of music, literature, and creativity in shaping public opinion and inspiring civic action, especially among our youth.”
“I charged them to “open the heavens of their creativity” and use their talents to mobilize citizens for voter registration.”
He said that “They pledged their total commitment to this cause, assuring us that they would use every available platform to raise awareness and encourage mass participation.”
On the part of Civil Society Groups “I reminded the CSOs that this campaign is not political; it is rather a patriotic mission, and one that perfectly aligns with the foundations upon which civil society platforms are built: service to humanity, accountability and commitment to a greater good of our practicing democracy.”
