A make shift bridge at Kureken Sani that linked Yanshana, with the Kano Metropolis collapsed on Monday night for the second time in a week leaving no fewer than a million residents stranded.
The strategic bridge was washed off last week by a torrential rain experienced in the city that forced local authorities to erected a temporary bridge to ease both human and vehicular movement in an out densely populated slum.
The collapsed of Dare Bridge at Kureken Sani, located within the Danshana community of Kumbotso Local Government Area in Kano metropolis effectively cut off residents from accessing their daily activities.
A resident of Yanshana, Malam Mustapha Mustapha who spoke on the emerging development, described the incident as “horrific and devastating.”
Malam Mustapha said the impact on the residents especially the students, patients, traders, civil servants, and many others who rely on the bridge for their daily survival are enormous.
He explained, “As I speak to you now, we are all desperately searching for alternative routes to carry on with our daily activities. The only available path requires a long and tedious journey, stretching several kilometers and leading to a far-off location.”
Mustapha expressed deep concern over the consequences on residents, more especially young children and women who regularly travel to Naibawa for school and medical care.
He said “signs of the bridge’s deterioration had been visible for a long time, yet no meaningful action was taken to prevent its eventual collapse.”
“We are grateful that no lives were lost in the incident, as it happened during the night while it was raining,” he said.
Mustapha further revealed that residents have begun mobilizing to march to the Goverment House to seek urgent intervention to ease the suffering brought about by the disaster.
