By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul
KANO – Kano based Human rights lawyer, Abba Hikima, has taken the lead in a major humanitarian intervention following the Dorayi tragedy in Kano State, mobilising public support that yielded ₦25 million in relief funds for a widower who lost his wife and six children.
The Dorayi tragedy, which claimed the lives of a woman and her six children, sparked nationwide sympathy and renewed conversations around social protection and community support, with Hikima’s intervention standing out as a model of citizen-led humanitarian response.
The crowdfunding initiative, coordinated by Hikima in his verified Facebook page days after the incident, drew widespread contributions from Nigerians across the country, reflecting a strong collective response to the scale of the loss suffered by the affected family.
Hikima at formal transfer to the widower on Friday, disclosed that the funds were deliberately received into his personal bank account to ensure quick coordination, transparency, and accountability, assuring donors that the money would be handed over promptly and intact to the beneficiary.
According to him, six days after the tragedy, the entire sum was transferred directly into the bank account of the widower, Malam Haruna Bashir, in fulfillment of the trust placed in him by the public.
He stressed that to further guarantee accountability and protect the interest of the victim, the lawyer said he provided Bashir with a copy of his bank statement and accompanied him to the bank to place restrictions on the account to safeguard the funds until the family’s situation stabilises.
Hikima also revealed that ₦3.4 million of the total amount came through Engr. Usman Ahmad Zun-Noorayne, who independently mobilised donations from members of the public and forwarded the sum as part of the collective relief effort.
The disbursement was completed on Friday, Hikima explained, due to the anticipated closure of banks on Saturday, ensuring there was no delay in securing the funds for the widower.
