Hadiza’s Family Speaks On Her Final Moments

By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul

KANO — The family of the late Hajiya Hadiza, a popular food vendor widely known among journalists and visitors to the Kano Press Centre, has recounted the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding her sudden death.

The emotional account was shared on Monday evening when the Acting Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, Comrade Mustapha Gambo Muhammad, led a delegation of journalists and media professionals on a condolence visit to the deceased’s family residence at Kawo Lambu Layi Transformer in Kano.

Members of the delegation, which included prominent journalists and representatives of the Correspondents’ Chapel led by Yusuf Bala Nayaya, were received by grieving family members.

The atmosphere at the residence was somber, with relatives and sympathizers visibly overwhelmed by the sudden loss.

Speaking during the visit, the deceased’s elder brother, who was simply identified as Malam, narrated how the woman spent her final hours preparing food for customers following the Eid-el-Kabir holiday break.

According to him, she woke up early that morning and devoted herself to cooking a large quantity of food for an outing and other engagements.

“She was full of energy and determined to meet her customers’ needs after the Sallah break. She completed the cooking and other preparations as usual, but shortly afterward she complained of feeling unwell,” he said.

Malam explained that the family immediately became concerned when her condition deteriorated and rushed her to a hospital for urgent medical attention. However, fate had other plans.

“We quickly took her to the hospital hoping she would recover, but sadly she passed away on the way before we could get help for her. It all happened so suddenly. We are still in shock,” he added, fighting back tears.

Members of the NUJ delegation described the late Hadiza as a hardworking and caring woman whose food business had become a familiar part of daily life for many journalists and visitors to the Press Centre.

Prayers were offered for the repose of her soul, while the family expressed appreciation to the journalists and other sympathizers for standing by them during what they described as one of the most painful moments in their lives.
