Hanga, Sagagi, Danbaffa Tipped as Possible Gwarzo’s Running Mates

By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul

KANO — Political consultations have intensified within the Kwankwasiyya movement as three prominent figures—Senator Rufa’i Hanga, Mallam Shehu Sagagi and Alhaji Lamin Danbaffa—are being mentioned as possible running mates to Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo ahead of the 2027 Kano governorship election.

Sources familiar with the ongoing discussions said the search for a deputy governorship candidate has gained momentum following Gwarzo’s emergence as the governorship flagbearer of the New Democratic Congress (NDC).

A party insider told journalists that Senator Hanga remains a strong contender because of his longstanding loyalty to the movement and his experience in elective politics.

“Many believe Hanga deserves consideration given his commitment to the cause over the years,” the source said.

However, those opposed to Hanga’s nomination questions his electoral appeal and ability to attract new voters.

Mallam Shehu Sagagi, a former Chief of Staff in Kano State, is also attracting attention within the movement.

According to party sources, his close relationship with the leadership and his influence among religious and business communities make him a formidable option.

“Sagagi has built networks across different segments of society. Those connections could prove valuable in a highly competitive election,” another source said.

Alhaji Lamin Danbaffa has likewise emerged in discussions surrounding the deputy governorship slot.

Supporters cite his long-standing relationship with the movement’s leadership and his experience in public service as factors working in his favour.

While no final decision has been announced, insiders said consultations are continuing as party leaders seek a candidate capable of strengthening the ticket ahead of an anticipated fierce contest.

“The priority is to choose someone who can complement Gwarzo and help deliver victory at the polls,” a source close to the process stated.
