Bauchi: How a ₦3,000 Dowry Wedding Triggered Arrest of 10

By Muhammad Naziru Muhammad

KANO — A controversial ₦3,000 dowry wedding in Bauchi State has led to the arrest of 10 youths after authorities said the ceremony was conducted without parental consent and proper Islamic procedures.

The groom, Muhammad Chindo, the bride, Kamila, and eight of their friends were reportedly arrested following directives from Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, who ordered security agencies to investigate the matter.

The youths, said to be residents of Mahaukata area in Bauchi metropolis, allegedly organized the entire wedding themselves, with one acting as imam, another as wali, and a female friend serving as “uwar ɗaki.”

Chairman of the Bauchi State Vigilante Group, Alhaji Umaru Shayi, said the arrests followed several days of investigation.

“We tracked the suspects for about five days before we were able to arrest 10 persons linked to the incident,” he said.

The suspects were later presented to the wife of the governor, Hajiya Aishatu Bala Mohammed, who condemned the act and urged parents to closely monitor their children.

She described the situation as “unacceptable,” calling for stronger awareness on proper marriage procedures and youth guidance.

The matter has since drawn the attention of government officials, traditional rulers, and religious leaders, who held an emergency meeting over the incident.

Commander of the Bauchi State Hisbah Board, Mohammed Bununu, said the marriage was not valid under Islamic law, citing lack of proper guardianship and consent.

“The father of the bride was not aware, and without a wali and proper dowry, the marriage is not valid in Islam,” he said.

The suspects have been handed over to the Bauchi State Police Command for further investigation, according to spokesperson CSP Nafiu Habib.
