Kano Varsity Names Complex After ECN Director-General

KANO — Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, near Kano, over the weekend named its Engineering Faculty Complex after the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi.
The honour was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Musa Tukur Yakasai, during a ceremony held on campus to mark the commissioning of key solar energy projects aimed at boosting power supply and enhancing academic activities within the institution.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor said the decision to rename the complex followed the Director-General’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions, particularly within academic environments.
He noted that the gesture was meant to inspire students and staff to pursue innovation and excellence in engineering and related fields.
The event also featured the flag-off of a 2-megawatt solar mini-grid and the commissioning of 200 solar-powered streetlights across the university, projects delivered through the Energy Commission of Nigeria to improve electricity access, safety, and research capacity.
The ECN Director-General, while responding to the honour, expressed gratitude to the university management, describing the recognition as both humbling and motivating.
He said the projects would significantly enhance learning conditions and support cutting-edge research in science and technology.
“As an alumnus of the Faculty of Engineering, returning in this capacity is deeply meaningful to me,” he said.
“This institution laid the foundation for my career, and I remain committed to contributing to its growth and development.”
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, who was present at the ceremony, commended the university and ECN for the initiative, stating that the federal government remains committed to promoting renewable energy and strengthening research institutions nationwide.
Also in attendance was the Emir of Gaya, Aliyu Abdulkadir, alongside other dignitaries and stakeholders, who lauded the collaboration between government agencies and the university in driving sustainable development.
The Director-General further appreciated Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s support towards renewable energy initiatives, noting that such interventions are critical to Nigeria’s long-term economic and technological advancement.
