KANO – The death of Kano housewife, Aishatu Umar after post-surgery complications at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center, Kano has triggered outrage in the ancient city, and calls for accountability within the state’s healthcare system.
Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, died at about 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, after months of post-operative pain leaving behind her husband and children, but her family has accused medical personnel at the Urology Center of alleged ‘negligence’.
According to Abubakar Mohammed who spoke on behalf of the family said , Aishatu fell ill several months ago and underwent surgery at the urology center in September, pointing out that the procedure was expected to improve her condition, but she reportedly developed severe abdominal pain shortly after the operation.
The family said she repeatedly returned to the hospital over the next four months, complaining of persistent pain, alleged that medical staff at the centre only prescribed pain relievers during these visits, without conducting detailed investigations into the cause of her condition.
The family claimed that it was only two days before her death, that comprehensive tests and scans were carried out, adding that the results allegedly revealed that “a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her body during the September operation.”
The family explained that “Following the discovery, arrangements were reportedly being made for a corrective surgery, as her condition worsened before the procedure could take place, and she died in the early hours of the day.”
The family members described the alleged act as a serious breach of medical standards and patient safety, as they called on the Kano State Government and relevant health regulatory authorities to immediately investigate the matter and take appropriate action, insisting that justice must be served for Aishatu Umar.
As at the time of going to press, Daily Independent learned that Kano State Ministry of Health has conveyed an emergency meeting of its officials for a response.
Nabilusi Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry said ” we are having a meeting now on the issue, and we intend to call a press conference soon to address same”
