KANO – It was a celebration galore for 5,200 grassroots women on Tuesday at the Kano Government House as they lined up before Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to receive N50,000 start up capital in fulfilment of the governor’s 2023 campaign promises.
The 5,200 beneficiaries for the governor’s largesse were drawn from political wards across the 44 local government areas.
Governor Abba Yusuf, who spoke at the ceremony, said “We promised to support you in taking care of yourselves and your children. We pledged to make you self-reliant and to take care of your health, especially the health of pregnant women among you and children.”
He said “Today we have fulfilled our promise. We will be doing this to the same number of women but with some modifications to ensure transparency and accountability.”
Yusuf stated that “Following the discovery of discrepancies in the disbursement during the first phase, we introduced measures to ensure the money reaches the targeted beneficiaries,”
Some of the measures taken included the state government setting up a 20-member committee in each LGA, comprising traditional rulers, the LG chairman, the party chairman, among other members.
Yusuf enjoined the beneficiaries to utilise the funds by establishing small-scale businesses of their choice to improve their socio-economic status and that of their families.
A cross-section of the beneficiaries who spoke to newsmen at the event commended the state government for the support.
