Yusuf Flags Off 150-Truck Fertiliser Distribution to 484 Wards

By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul

KANO — Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Thursday launched the distribution of 150 truckloads of subsidised fertiliser to farmers across Kano State’s 484 political wards.

The intervention, comprising 90,000 bags of fertiliser, will cover all 44 local government areas, with the state government saying the exercise is designed to ensure genuine farmers have access to affordable farm inputs at the start of the planting season.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Kano, Yusuf said agriculture remains at the heart of his administration’s development agenda, noting that the fertiliser programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on food production and economic growth.

The governor said the state, in partnership with the 44 local government councils, had subsidised the cost of the fertiliser by 50 per cent, reducing the selling price from about ₦50,000 to ₦25,000 per bag to ease the financial burden on farmers.

He said each local government area would receive an average of three truckloads of fertiliser for onward distribution, while every ward had been allocated enough supplies for 70 beneficiaries to guarantee broad-based access across the state.

According to Yusuf, the intervention builds on a series of agricultural initiatives introduced by his administration over the past three years to improve crop yields, strengthen food security and stimulate economic activities in rural communities.

He said the government had continued to invest in the provision of quality farm inputs, improved farming techniques, pest control measures and other support programmes to increase productivity and reduce the cost of food.

To safeguard the integrity of the exercise, the governor announced the constitution of a state fertiliser distribution committee headed by the Commissioner for Agriculture to oversee implementation and ensure transparency.

He added that corresponding committees had also been inaugurated in each of the 44 local government areas to monitor the distribution process and ensure the subsidised fertiliser reaches intended beneficiaries without diversion.

Yusuf urged members of the committees to discharge their responsibilities with fairness and accountability, stressing that the success of the programme would depend on an equitable distribution process.

He also commended security agencies in the state for maintaining a peaceful environment and supporting government initiatives, expressing confidence that the farming season would record improved output through the intervention.
