Tight Security in Kano as Government Unveils Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
By the Newsroom
KANO  – Vehicular movement were heavily restricted on Tuesday in some highbrow areas of Kano as security agencies mounted an unusual show of force around key government facilities, triggering anxiety among residents.
Several roads within and around the Government House General area were barricaded by officials of the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), forcing motorists to make detours and slowing commercial activities in the area.
Inside the Government House, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) were seen stationed with an armoured personnel carrier, reinforcing security at strategic points.
In contrast, the presence of regular police officers within the premises appeared scanty, according to observations by this reporter.
The heightened security measures were not officially explained, but the development may not be unconnected with the planned launch of the state government’s Neighbourhood Watch initiative scheduled for later in the day.
While restrictions were strict around the Government House axis, security presence was visibly heavier in and around the Sani Abacha Stadium, the designated venue for the launch.
Armed police officers were deployed at entry points, while patrol teams were stationed along adjoining roads.
Residents and commuters expressed surprise at the scale of the security build-up, with some describing the measures as “panicky,” given the absence of any reported security threat in the city.
Despite the restrictions and heavy deployment of security personnel, Kano metropolis remained largely calm, with businesses operating normally in most parts of the city outside the restricted zones.
As of press time, officials of the state government and security agencies were keeping mum on the reasons behind the extraordinary security arrangements, leaving residents to speculate about the motive for the precautionary steps.
