Prof. Kurfi Advocates Media-Academia Synergy at NUJ Event

KANO — A Professor of Communication at Bayero University Kano, Yakubu Mainasara Kurfi, on Sunday called for stronger collaboration between media professionals and academic institutions to enhance journalism practice in Nigeria.
Prof. Kurfi who spoke at the Kano Press Centre during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr Sallah Thanksgiving and special prayers organised by the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), described the event as “inspiring and heart-warming,”.
Prof Kurfi hailed the leadership of the chapel for creating a platform that fosters unity and professional reflection among journalists.
The university don stressed the need for synergy between the NUJ, practising journalists, and the Faculty of Communication at BUK, noting that such collaboration would improve the training and retraining of both professionals and students.
According to him, “there is a need to build a strong relationship between the academia and the media industry to ensure that journalists are equipped with current knowledge and ethical standards.”
Prof. Kurfi added that his faculty would consider introducing similar initiatives to strengthen engagement with media practitioners and promote continuous learning.
Earlier, the National President of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya, represented by a member of the union’s Board of Trustees, Abbas Ibrahim, commended the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel for fostering unity among its members.
He urged journalists to reflect on the lessons of Ramadan and promote peace, tolerance, and professionalism in their daily work.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Murtala Adewale, said the gathering was not just a celebration but an opportunity to strengthen bonds and reflect on shared responsibilities.
