OWERI(Imo state, South East Nigeria) – In a decisive election, Alhassan Yahaya, former National Deputy President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has been elected as the new National President of the union.
Yahaya secured 436 votes, defeating Dele Atunbi, the outgoing National Treasurer, who garnered 97 votes, and Garba Muhammad, who polled 39 votes.
The election, which took place in Owerri, Imo State, was attended by 602 delegates from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including the Federal Capital Territory.
Yahaya’s victory marks the beginning of a new chapter for the NUJ, and he is expected to lead the union in promoting the welfare of journalists and upholding the principles of good journalism.
Outgoing National President, Comrade Christopher Isiguzo, has assured a smooth transition of power, stating that he will not interfere with the administration of the new leadership.
Yahaya’s leadership will steer the affairs of the union for the next three years.
