NBBF Presidency: Mustapha Unveils ‘Arise’ Blueprint for Basketball Revolution
By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul
KANO — A presidential aspirant for the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, yesterday unveiled an “Arise” blueprint targeting fundamental reshaping the administration, development and commercial fortunes of Nigerian basketball.
The manifesto places institutional reform, accountability, investment and measurable performance at the centre of his proposed leadership, with a broad programme covering domestic competitions, grassroots development, players’ welfare, technical personnel and the national teams.
Mustapha said his ambition was to build a basketball system in which talent could be identified, nurtured and given a clear pathway from community courts and schools to professional clubs and the national teams.
“Nigerian basketball deserves more than promises. It needs clear strategy, effective administration, strategic partnerships and leadership that puts the game and its people first,” he said.
A major plank of the blueprint is the strengthening of the NBBF as an institution, with Mustapha advocating a more accountable and professionally managed federation capable of setting measurable targets and delivering against them.
He also proposed a stronger domestic basketball structure, arguing that competitive and commercially viable leagues are essential to retaining talent, improving players’ welfare and creating a sustainable ecosystem around the sport.
Under the proposed agenda, greater attention would be given to the development of coaches, referees and other technical officials, alongside improved opportunities for players to develop their careers and compete at higher levels.
Mustapha further identified investment and commercial partnerships as critical to the future of the game, stressing that basketball must evolve beyond dependence on sporadic funding and build sustainable relationships with corporate organisations and other strategic partners.
He said the potential of Nigerian basketball could be leveraged for wider social and economic benefits, particularly through youth empowerment, social inclusion and the creation of opportunities for young people.
“Every talent, from the community courts to the international stage, must have an opportunity to grow and excel,” Mustapha said, adding that the objective was to create a system capable of producing results rather than merely announcing intentions.
The NBBF presidential hopeful said his proposed leadership would also seek to unite the various interests within the basketball family, arguing that the sport could only achieve lasting progress through cooperation among players, coaches, clubs, officials, administrators, sponsors and other stakeholders.
He stressed that the ultimate measure of the proposed agenda would be its ability to strengthen the institution, improve the domestic game and translate Nigeria’s considerable basketball talent into sustained international success.
“Beyond the court, basketball can drive youth empowerment, social inclusion, national unity and economic opportunity. We must build a system that attracts investment, inspires confidence and leaves a lasting legacy,” he said.
Mustapha said his decision to seek the NBBF presidency was driven by a desire to contribute to the long-term development of the sport and provide leadership focused on systems, accountability and delivery.
“My commitment remains clear: to unite the basketball family, strengthen the institution and move Nigerian basketball from potential to podium,” he declared.
He consequently called on stakeholders to embrace the “Arise” vision, describing it as a proposed new direction built around stronger institutions, greater investment and opportunities for the next generation of Nigerian basketball players.
