Lagos Power Brokers Settle For Sonayon-James as Hamzat’s Running Mate

KANO —— The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly settled on Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as the running mate to its governorship candidate, Dr. Femi Hamzat, ahead of the forthcoming Lagos State governorship election.
Party insiders disclosed that the decision followed extensive consultations within the ruling party as it prepares for what is expected to be a keenly contested electoral race.
Sources familiar with the development said the selection of Sonayon-James was influenced by her strong grassroots credentials and political reach, particularly in the Badagry axis of the state.
If officially confirmed, Sonayon-James will become one of the highest-ranking political figures from Badagry to feature on a major governorship ticket in Lagos State.
“She brings experience, loyalty to the party and a strong connection with the people at the grassroots level,” a party source was quoted as saying.
Sonayon-James currently serves as the Assistant State Woman Leader of the APC in Lagos and is regarded by party stakeholders as one of the influential female politicians within the state’s political structure.
Her emergence could help the APC strengthen its support base among women and young voters while expanding its influence in strategic parts of Lagos.
Sonayon-James has built a professional profile as an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) specialist and sustainability risk consultant, with experience in public policy and community development initiatives.
Supporters of her nomination argue that her blend of political and professional experience makes her well-suited for higher responsibility in government.
A source close to the process said the choice reflects the party’s determination to project inclusiveness and broaden participation in governance.
“The APC leadership wanted a candidate with grassroots appeal and a proven record of service. Sonayon-James fits that description,” the source said.
Her political career includes service as Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area, where she was involved in local governance and social intervention programmes.
Her roots in the Kweme royal family in Badagry is an added advantage that could enhance the party’s engagement with traditional institutions and local communities.
Party officials, however, noted that a formal announcement of the Hamzat-Sonayon-James ticket is expected in the coming days.
