Kano Unveils 100-Hectare Recycling City, Eyes Investors

KANO — The Kano State Government has unveiled plans to establish a 100-hectare Recycling City as part of efforts to attract investors, expand the recycling industry and create employment opportunities across the state.
The initiative was disclosed by the Managing Director of the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil, in a statement issued on Tuesday by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Malam Abubakar Ahmad.
According to the statement, the proposed Recycling City will serve as a dedicated hub for recycling companies, investors and other stakeholders in the waste management sector.
Dr. Khalil said the facility would provide the infrastructure required for businesses engaged in recycling and waste recovery to operate efficiently, describing the project as a major step towards building a sustainable circular economy in Kano.
“The Recycling City will bring together recycling companies, investors and other stakeholders in one location, while providing the necessary infrastructure to support their operations,” he said.
He noted that the project is designed to transform waste into economic opportunities by encouraging private sector participation and promoting value addition through recycling.
The REMASAB boss also disclosed that the agency has reorganised waste collectors and scrap dealers into cooperative societies to improve coordination, productivity and access to economic opportunities within the recycling value chain.
In addition, he said the board has trained 160 women in waste sorting and recycling as part of its empowerment programme.
According to him, the beneficiaries were provided with protective gear and working tools to enable them to carry out their activities safely and more effectively.
Dr. Khalil said the measures reflect the Kano State Government’s commitment to modern waste management, environmental sustainability and inclusive economic development through investment in the recycling sector.
