Kano Targets Grassroots Football Revival with 60-Club Kit Initiative

By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul

KANO — The Kano State Government, on Thursday unveiled a fresh grassroots football development initiative that will see 60 community football clubs across 12 local government areas receive complete football kits.

The intervention, announced ahead of the distribution ceremony in Kano, is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s broader youth empowerment agenda, with officials describing grassroots football as the foundation for producing future stars and creating opportunities for thousands of young people.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports, Sani Musa Danja, said the programme marks the beginning of sustained government investment in community football rather than a one-off donation of sporting equipment.

“This is just the beginning. We are taking our intervention directly to grassroots clubs because Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is committed to youth empowerment through sports,” Danja said.

Under the initiative, five football clubs will be selected from each of the 12 benefiting local government areas that include Kano Municipal, Fagge, Dala, Gwale, Tarauni, Nasarawa, Ungogo, Kumbotso, Gezawa, Wudil, Bichi and Dawakin Kudu bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 60 clubs.

Danja noted that many neighbourhood clubs have long depended on donations from politicians and wealthy individuals for basic equipment, saying the government had chosen to provide direct institutional support to ease that burden.

“There were clubs that struggled to get ordinary footballs or playing kits. Government has now stepped in to support those young players,” he said.

Beyond equipment, the state plans to strengthen football development through coach education, with experienced European instructors expected to train local coaches in Kano.

According to Danja, producing technically sound coaches is essential to discovering and nurturing talented players capable of progressing to elite levels of the game.

He described football as both a social and economic asset, arguing that the global value of the sport makes grassroots investment a strategic opportunity for youth development and job creation.

The football kits will be presented to the beneficiary clubs during a ceremony at the Coronation Hall in Kano, while the government says additional incentives, including recognition awards for outstanding grassroots clubs and contributors to sports development, are also being introduced.

Danja added that the administration’s long-term objective is to establish a sustainable pathway that enables talented footballers from Kano to rise from community competitions to national and international football.
