Kano Grieves After Midnight Building Collapse Claims Bride-to-Be, Housemate

KANO — Grief engulfed the Goron Dutse community in Kano after a midnight building collapse claimed the lives of two young women from the same household.
One of the casualties was a 20-year-old bride-to-be whose wedding preparations were reportedly underway.
Residents said the tragic incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. behind the WRECA general area of Goron Dutse, where the victims were trapped beneath the rubble after the residential building suddenly gave way.
Eyewitnesses told this newspaper that
residents were awakened by the loud crash, rushed to the scene in a desperate bid to save the women.
They explained that neighbours worked frantically to remove debris with bare hands and simple tools, but their efforts ended in heartbreak as both victims were recovered lifeless.
One of the deceased, described by neighbours as gentle and cheerful, was said to be looking forward to her forthcoming wedding, making the tragedy even more devastating for family members and friends.
“We did everything we could to rescue them, but it was too late. The entire neighbourhood is in shock,” a resident who participated in the rescue effort told our correspondent.
By Thursday morning, mourners had gathered at the family home, where tears and prayers replaced what had been expected to be a season of celebration.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by the Kano State Fire Service, the police, or other relevant authorities regarding the cause of the collapse or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
