FG, APC Leaders Renew Pledge to Drive Sustainable Health Sector Reforms

KANO  —– Federal Government officials and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable health sector reforms at the National Health Convention of the APC Medical Council held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.
The high-level gathering brought together senior government officials, policymakers, healthcare professionals and development stakeholders.
The meetings under the theme, “Investing in Health: Building a Sustainable Healthcare System for Nigerians.” Discussions focused on practical strategies to reposition Nigeria’s healthcare system for resilience, inclusiveness and long-term sustainability.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to pursue comprehensive reforms across the health sector.
 He emphasized that strengthening primary healthcare and ensuring sustainable financing mechanisms remain central to improving service delivery nationwide.
Similarly, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, assured participants of the administration’s commitment to policies that would enhance health security and expand access to quality care.
He noted that collaboration among federal, state and non-state actors would be critical to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
In his opening remarks, the Director-General of the APC Medical Council, Dr. Samuel A. Adetoye, said sustainable national development cannot be achieved without deliberate and consistent investment in the health sector.
He identified revitalising primary healthcare infrastructure, strengthening funding mechanisms, enhancing workforce capacity and promoting accountability as key pillars for reform.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Forum of Health Commissioners of Nigeria, the Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, stressed that sustained investment in Primary Health Care (PHC) remains the bedrock of an efficient and equitable health system.
 According to him, revitalised PHC services are essential for expanding access, reducing inequalities and accelerating progress toward UHC.
Former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, called for deeper collaboration among government institutions, development partners and healthcare stakeholders to drive sustainable progress.
He urged political leaders and policymakers to match commitments with measurable actions that would strengthen healthcare delivery at all levels.
