KANO (Kano, North West Nigeria) – The Kano State government has launched an ambitious project to construct new blocks of classrooms across all 44 local government areas.
This initiative aligns with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s declaration of a state of emergency in education last June.
Yusuf on that auspicious occasion said the goal is to provide quality education by ensuring public schools have the necessary manpower and infrastructure.
A visit by Finenews Nigeria indicated that the construction project is underway in various primary schools, including those in Tarauni, Nassarawa, and Gwale within the Kano metropolitan councils.
Finenews Nigeria specifically visited these sites and reported significant progress. For instance, twin blocks of classrooms are nearing completion at some schools, with learning continuing alongside construction.
At Namadi Primary School Ungwar Jakada, a one-story block of four classrooms with an office is 60% completed. Similarly, Abubakar Yusuf GJSS in Hotoro Kudu has reached an advanced stage of construction for a one-story block of four classrooms with an office.
Darmanawa Gada Karfe is also seeing progress, with construction of a one-story block of classrooms with an office currently at 20% completion, according to QS Aminu Rabiu, the contractor handling the site.
The Commissioner for Education, Haruna Doguwa told Daily INDEPENDENT that “this massive construction project demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving education in Kano State.
Doguwa said “By investing in infrastructure, the state aims to provide a conducive learning environment and equip public schools with the necessary resources.”
He said “The project’s alignment with the governor’s emergency declaration underscores the urgency and importance of addressing educational challenges in the state. As the construction progresses, it is expected to have a positive impact on the quality of education and the overall development of Kano State.”
