Senator Dino Melaye ex Senator Kogi West, on Tuesday criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over its rising debt profile, warning that the borrowing spree may soon extend to domestic fintech companies like Opay and Moniepoint.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time program, Melaye accused the Tinubu administration of reckless borrowing and extravagant spending amidst severe economic hardship.
“The Senate has already approved over $21 billion for this government, and they’re still processing another $1.7 billion World Bank loan,” Melaye stated. “With the way things are going, we won’t be surprised if the president starts borrowing from Opay and Moniepoint very soon.”
Melaye berated the administration for misplaced priorities, citing the purchase of a presidential yacht and a new aircraft for the presidential fleet despite Nigerians enduring hunger and economic pain. “A president who wants ordinary Nigerians to tighten their belt is living in luxury,” Melaye fumed. “He’s driven in expensive cars, bought a new jet, and a yacht, yet hasn’t stopped reckless spending and borrowing.”
When questioned about his own collection of luxury cars amidst widespread poverty, Melaye responded emphatically: “Go and fact-check me. I didn’t buy those cars while in office, and I’ve never done any contract with or for any government.”
Melaye demanded an end to reckless borrowing, urging the Tinubu administration to prioritize policies that would relieve ordinary citizens’ economic suffering. When asked about his potential candidacy in 2027, Melaye emphasized that his focus is currently on educating Nigerians and joining patriots to save the country from economic calamity. “My priority now is to educate Nigerians and join patriots to save Nigeria from this race to calamity,” he said, adding that he’d support any candidate with the courage and sincerity to return Nigeria to winning ways.
