KANO — Cybercriminals on Tuesday hijacked the WhatsApp account of the Chairman of Gwale Local Government Area, Hon. Abubakar Mu’azu Mojo.

The identity theft by hackers has sparked concerns over possible misuse of the account, prompting an urgent warning to the public.

A statement issued on Tuesday by Comrade Waleeth Adam Bako on behalf of the Office of the Media Aide to the chairman, revealed that cybercriminals gained unauthorized access to the chairman’s WhatsApp account and have taken control of it.

“We wish to inform the general public that the WhatsApp account belonging to the Executive Chairman of Gwale Local Government, Hon. Abubakar Mu’azu Mojo, has been compromised by cybercriminals,” the statement said.

The chairman’s office warned members of the public to disregard any messages, calls or requests originating from the account until further notice, stressing that the account is no longer under the control of its owner.

It also urged residents to exercise caution and avoid sharing personal information or sending money in response to any communication from the compromised account.

“Members of the public are advised not to provide any personal details, financial assistance or respond to any request coming from the account pending its recovery,” the statement added.

The office said efforts were underway to recover the account, noting that relevant authorities and cybersecurity experts had been engaged to address the breach.

“We are working closely with the appropriate authorities and cybersecurity experts to recover the account and prevent any misuse,” the statement said.

The office appealed for public vigilance and cooperation while steps are being taken to restore access to the account.
