KANO — Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Monday approved the merger of the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change into a single entity.
The newly created ministry will now operate as the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, bringing together responsibilities related to water management, environmental protection, and climate resilience under one administrative framework.
Announcing the development, the Commissioner, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, expressed gratitude to the governor for entrusting him with the leadership of the integrated ministry. He said the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening governance and enhancing coordination across related sectors.
“I am deeply honoured by the confidence reposed in me to lead this newly integrated Ministry and drive the realization of its mandate in service to the people of Kano State,” Dr. Hashim said in a statement.
The commissioner acknowledged the challenges associated with merging two key ministries with distinct mandates but assured residents that measures were being put in place to ensure a smooth transition.
“I am fully conscious that this is not an easy responsibility. Bringing together two vital sectors with distinct but interconnected mandates requires commitment, coordination, and hard work,” he stated.
Dr. Hashim added that he and his team were fully prepared for the task ahead and would work to strengthen service delivery while maintaining focus on the core objectives of the new ministry.
“We remain committed to ensuring a seamless transition while strengthening service delivery across both sectors,” he said, noting that environmental sustainability, climate resilience and water resource management would remain top priorities.
He further explained that the ministry’s activities would be guided by the development agenda of Governor Yusuf’s administration, with renewed efforts to address environmental challenges and improve access to sustainable water resources across the state.
