Gov. Yusuf Drops Red Cap in Paris, Sparking Debate in Kano
By Ahmad Tijjani Abdul
KANO —– Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has landed in Paris, the capital city of France, drawing attention not just for the purpose of his visit but for his notable departure from traditional attire.
The governor was photographed in a simple outfit without his signature red cap, a cultural and political symbol widely associated with Kano leadership.
The red cap, often worn by state leaders, carries significant historical and cultural weight.
Its absence in public appearances is rare, and pundits have quickly noted the departure, sparking online debates about its meaning.
Accompanying the governor on the trip is Engineer Ahmad Ibrahim Karaye, the member of the State House of Assembly representing Karaye Local Government.
Sources indicate that the delegation is in Paris for discussions related to investment, education, and developmental partnerships, although official details remain limited.
Social media reactions in Kano were swift, with citizens interpreting the governor’s attire in different ways.
Some praised him for projecting simplicity and modernity, while others questioned whether the absence of the cap signaled a political message or a break from tradition.
A Kano-based political commentator who chose to be anonymous said “Going abroad without the traditional cap may indicate openness to international engagement or a deliberate distancing from local political symbolism.”
As at press time, Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Director General Media to the Governor wasn’t available for comment.
