BUK Masscom Graduate Hauwa Breaks Gender Barrier, Emerges First Female Kano NUJ Secretary

KANO — Hauwa Zaharadeen, a 1999 Mass Communication graduate of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has emerged as the first woman to serve as Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council.
Her confirmation was endorsed by the NUJ National Executive Council (NEC) at its meeting in Dutse, Jigawa State capital on Tuesday.
Consequently, Zaharadeen’s emergence followed the dismissal of the former Kano NUJ Secretary, Abubakar Kwaru, over alleged financial infractions.
There are noticeable excitement at the Kano NUJ Press Centre on Wednesday, with journalists and members of the council describing the new secretary as ‘capable, hardworking and committed to teamwork’.
For Zaharadeen, her emergence marks a significant milestone in the history of the Kano council which demonstrates that women can break barriers and occupy strategic leadership positions within the union.
In an exclusive chat with finenewsng.com, she expressed appreciation to the NUJ National Council, Kano State Council and members for the confidence reposed in her.
“I am deeply honoured to accept the leadership role at the NUJ Kano Secretariat following my official confirmation at the NEC meeting in Dutse, Jigawa State,” she said.
The 1999 BUK graduate said she was humbled by the opportunity to become the first woman to occupy the position, describing it as an achievement that could inspire more women to seek leadership roles within the union.
She pledged to use her tenure to promote growth, development and unity within the Kano council, stressing that teamwork would remain central to achieving the union’s objectives.
“I strongly believe that teamwork is the bedrock of success. To achieve our common goals, collaboration will be the key throughout my tenure,” Zaharadeen said.
She thanked members for their trust and support, promising to work with them to build “a stronger, more united union.”
