Kano Traces, Saves 185 Contacts of Lassa Fever Patient

KANO — The Kano State Government has successfully traced, monitored and treated 185 persons who came into contact with a Lassa fever patient, preventing what officials described as a potential outbreak of the deadly disease in the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the health sector achievements recorded under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration over the past three years.
According to the commissioner, the index patient travelled to Kano from a state known for recurring Lassa fever outbreaks and later developed symptoms after arriving in Garun Mallam Local Government Area.
He explained that the woman initially received treatment at a local health facility before being referred to Kura General Hospital and subsequently to Mallam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where she was confirmed to have contracted Lassa fever.
“Unfortunately, the patient died, but our surveillance team immediately swung into action to trace all persons who had contact with her,” Labaran said.
He stated that health officials identified 185 contacts, including the deceased’s husband, and placed them under close observation and medical care.
“All the identified contacts were traced, diagnosed and treated where necessary. We thank God that we were able to save them and prevent further transmission of the disease,” he added.
The commissioner attributed the successful intervention to improved disease surveillance and emergency response mechanisms established by the state government.
Labaran said the achievement reflects broader reforms in the health sector, including the establishment of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control, expansion of healthcare infrastructure and increased investment in disease prevention and control.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening public health systems and ensuring rapid responses to disease outbreaks across the state.
