Nagoda Draws the Line on Absenteeism in State Hospitals

KANO — The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board (HMB), Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, has declared zero tolerance for absenteeism and violations of approved duty rosters by health workers across the state’s secondary healthcare facilities.
Nagoda made the declaration during a series of unscheduled inspection visits to major hospitals in Kano State to assess staff commitment, service delivery and operational efficiency.
He expressed concern over what he described as the growing practice of some healthcare workers abandoning their duty posts despite being scheduled for call or shift duties, warning that such conduct poses serious risks to patients and undermines public confidence in the healthcare system.
“It is highly unprofessional for healthcare workers entrusted with the responsibility of saving lives to bolt from duty. Such actions place patients at serious risk and undermine the confidence of the public in our healthcare system,” he said.
The HMB boss warned that staff found violating duty roster regulations would face disciplinary measures, including forfeiture of call or shift allowances and other sanctions in line with civil service rules. During the inspections, query letters were issued to some personnel found wanting.
Nagoda also disclosed that the Kano State Government is working to complete the recruitment of additional healthcare professionals to address manpower shortages across hospitals. He, however, urged hospital managers to ensure prudent utilization of available personnel pending the conclusion of the recruitment process.
According to him, the Board has strengthened its monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to support ongoing efforts to improve healthcare service delivery and ensure residents have access to quality and timely medical care.
As part of measures to enhance accountability, he directed hospital management teams to immediately display updated daily duty rosters in all departments and units. He also stressed the need to maintain cleanliness and proper environmental sanitation within healthcare facilities.
The inspection team visited several health institutions, including Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Sheikh Jidda General Hospital, Infectious Diseases Hospital, Waziri Gidado General Hospital, Abubakar Imam Urology Centre and Mallam Jafar Hospital.
Nagoda reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to building a responsive, efficient and patient-centred healthcare system anchored on professionalism, dedication and accountability.
